Strings Tutor

Holly Cook

Holly began playing the violin when she was eight and first played the double bass when she was in comprehensive school. She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales from 2002 - 2005 on the double bass. She went to Cardiff University in 2002 to study Music, with violin as her first instrument. During that year she was approached by the Welsh College of Music and Drama to play double bass in their symphony orchestra in return for lessons with Dominic Seldis (principal of BBC National Orchestra of Wales). By 2003 she was studying in the RWCMD full-time with Mary Condliffe (Welsh National Opera) and Dominic Seldis; double bass now being her principal instrument.

Following her degree, she then moved to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she gained a scholarship and bursary to study with Jiri Hudec (principal of the Czech Philharmonic). During her time in Manchester she played with the Liverpool Philharmonic and took part in collaborations with the Halle Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera North. She then went to London to play for Southbank Sinfonia (7th Generation).

Holly is now freelancing on both double bass and violin and teaching in South Wales. She first began her teaching career with Ceredigion County Music Service, and commenced a successful double bass initiative with primary school in that area. She then moved to Swansea to work with West Glamorgan Music Service, teaching all the stringed instruments; violin, viola, cello and double bass. She now has several years of teaching experience behind her, and is looking forward to many more! She is a thoroughly trained classical musician, with a thriving career in the performing world. The lessons she provides are constructive and intensive, yet tailored to each individual pupil; giving you all you need to achieve whatever you want out of your chosen instrument, whether you're learning to perform or just for fun.
